   Army commanders should never turn away adventures, the power of narrative means they are likey to stumble across and defeat any and all high level enemies in the opposing force.

   All they have to tell them is that the castle over yonder contains the ancient magical relic sword of One Level Better Than Your Current One and then proceed to watch from a safe distance

     Just forbid them from interfering, then pull back to a safe distance (ideally, another plane of existence.)

       You cant go, they say the enemy commander has never been bested in a fight and that umm errr oh yes he has a dragon that err guards his huge pile of treasure. Now if you would excuse me I need to report to my superiors who are based in Sigil.
