Ah, but standing out is the way to go! On the other hand, I *am* a narcissist.
Actually, though, I’ve been amazed at how well an otherwise fairly generic character concept works when put into a slightly different context. One of my favorite characters of all time was Jaun “Aegis”, a classic white knight, self-sacrificing hero dude. Trying to reuse the character has led me to believe he was so much fun because he contrasted wonderfully against the relatively morally grey setting and party members. I like to think it helped the other party members feel more unique as well, essentially giving each of them a foil that they could both contrast against and interact with in a unique way.
