Actually, the Mindwood works off the principle of George Berkeley’s subjective idealism. (Basically, that objects only exist if they are being perceived in some way by an obeserver – in this case, Millicent.) – of course, there’s no way for her to ever know this.

Having started out to draw backgrounds, I immediately kicked off with some pictures without any background. Victory!

Millicent was 13 years old in my plan, however, she didn’t look it when I drew her, so I reduced her age to 10 years.
